Laser Engineering for Real-World Applications
Why Laser?
Laser technology is changing how industries engineer, prepare, modify and maintain material surfaces.
- Precise, highly controlled material processing
- Selective removal of coatings, corrosion and surface contamination
- Controlled surface preparation and modification
- Less reliance on abrasive media, chemicals and water
- Reduced secondary waste and clean-up
- Access to complex or targeted areas
- Greater process consistency and traceability
Our current focus is laser ablation, a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to abrasive blasting for preparing ferrous and non-ferrous metal surfaces. Other laser processes will follow.
About Us
PhononLUX is a specialist laser engineering consultancy helping organisations understand, evaluate and apply laser technologies across infrastructure, industrial and specialist applications.
PhononLUX grew out of our own hands-on laser work. Through that work, we saw a clear gap in the market – there was no independent laser consultancy actively carrying out its own research and development so we formed one.
We combine laser science, materials engineering and practical industry experience to develop solutions that work in real-world environments.
Our approach is evidence-based and laser-equipment agnostic. We develop laser engineering solutions around the application, the material and the required outcome.
Where our hands-on experience comes from
Our practical knowledge of laser surface treatment was built through laboratory testing and field trials on structural steel infrastructure.
That work is documented in the Heat Based Surface Treatment Methods report, the first comprehensive technical assessment of heat induction and laser surface treatment for bridges and infrastructure.

Laser Is Not Simply A Cleaning Tool
By controlling how laser energy interacts with a material, the process can be engineered to selectively remove, clean, profile or modify a surface.
The challenge is achieving the required outcome without adversely affecting the underlying material.
Successful laser processing requires an understanding of:
- The material and existing surface condition
- What needs to be removed or modified
- Laser wavelength and energy delivery
- Power, speed, focus, overlap and repetition
- Thermal and material interaction limits
- Required surface morphology and properties
- The intended next process or service condition
- Testing, validation and quality control
PhononLUX helps organisations take laser technology from concept and testing through to equipment selection, process development and practical implementation.
